Many club members will be happy sailing as crew, and enjoying a glass of wine overlooking a French harbour or a beer in a Solent pub (skippers too!). Others may want to progress to skipper the boats and this section gives details of the qualification process, and how to upgrade from Day Skipper to Coastal to Offshore Skipper.
Qualifications
Intending or upgrading skippers must first obtain the Club sailing and mileage experience, and the theory qualifications required for the skippering level wanted. Full details can be found in the Sailing Orders.
Details of club training courses are given in Training .
Assessment Trip
Once the necessary qualifications and experience have been obtained, potential skippers should arrange for a day sail with one of the club checkout skippers.
The format of a skipper checkout will be that of a normal club day, but with the opportunity to demonstrate that the boat can be managed safely with a crew of SOYC members. It is not intended to make potential skippers repeat their examination, but they need to be able to carry out the various tasks to the standards of the qualification that they hold. Full details of the checkout and skipper responsibilities can be found in the Sailing Orders.
Arranging an Assessment
Complete a Skipper Checkout/Upgrade Request form and e-mail it to the club Senior Training Skipper. One of the checkout skippers will then contact you to arrange a mutually convenient date for the assessment day. Normally only one member will be checked out during a trip.
Day Skipper Plus
Any day skipper who wishes to upgrade his/her sailing area should complete the Day Skipper Plus Request Form .
Upgrades
Existing skippers who want to upgrade to Coastal or Offshore Skipper should also complete a Skipper Checkout/Upgrade Request form and e-mail it to the Senior Training Skipper. A new Skipper Certificate will then be forwarded.
