Speedbird Offshore Yacht Club is committed to achieving the very highest standards of safety in its operation as a sailing club, and to being recognised for a standard of excellence within the sport of yachting. The Club provides a range of practical and theory training courses to help achieve these aims, and to enable members to get maximum enjoyment from the sport.

Some members will want to learn more about sailing, seamanship, maintenance or navigation. Others may wish to gain a recognised Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualification.

Those who would like to become a Club Skipper will need to obtain the appropriate RYA certificates, AND meet further specific SOYC criteria, which are in Skippers Qualification. The procedure to become a skipper can be found in Becoming a Skipper.

The Club is fortunate to have RYA qualified practical and theory instructors amongst its members, and in most cases they will run club courses. For theory courses, the Club is a Shorebased RYA Recognised Training Centre, and it has an association with the Hamble School of Yachting that enables us to run RYA practical courses on our own boats.

Theory courses are normally held at the Concorde Centre near to Heathrow.

Practical courses are run in our Solent home waters, giving excellent experience of the conditions and tides in which members will sail.

Satisfactory course completion leads to the award of an RYA or SOYC certificate.

Members are recommended to obtain an RYA Sail Cruising Scheme Syllabus & Logbook (G15). This contains all the details for RYA qualifications. Speak to any club skipper when sailing or
e-mail the Training Team.

It is strongly recommended that all those participating in the sport of cruising should be able to swim. Non-swimmers will be required to wear a lifejacket at all times.

Courses unique to SOYC are IYS (improve your skills) and Sail Trimming - expert education on the stuff not in the RYA course syllabus.
